The last space shuttle launch was on July 8th, and I was lucky enough to see Atlantis on her way. There were three quarters of a million people gathered at and around Cape Canaveral to see Atlantis launch. A lot of us were NASA Causeway ticket-holders and had our fingers crossed for no delays (and especially not a scrub). We were lucky though — aside from a minor scare at the 30 second mark, she went up on time and performed beautifully! It was such a special moment for everyone who had gone through the effort to make it there. A lot of the people I talked to told me that they’d wanted to see a launch for decades and this was their final opportunity, so seeing the shuttle go up as scheduled (a rarity) was a real gift.
